55th National Artistic Gymnastics Championship Inaugurated in Gurgaon: The Battle For Rio Begins

12th March, Gurgaon– The 55th Senior Artistic Gymnastics National Championship began amid much fanfare at Suncity World School, Gurgaon. Starting today the event will culminate on March 15, 2016, the 4-day gymnastics competition sets a stage for players from across the nation to prove their mettle. In addition to that, the points accrued here would also help them reserve a birth for the Olympics to be held in Rio-De-Janeiro.

The Championship was inaugurated by Shri Anil Vij, Minister of Health, Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Haryana. Other dignitaries present at the event were Shri Umesh Agarwal, MLA, Gurgaon, Shri Jagdeep Singh, IAS, Director, Sports and Youth affairs, Haryana, Shri Rakesh Gupta, Joint Secretary, Indian Olympics Association, Shri Habib Farooqui, Vice- President, Gymnastics Federation of India and Chetan Sharma, Cricketer.

The event started with the lighting of a lamp and an inaugural address by the Chief Guest. It was followed by a march past and some mesmerizing cultural and gymnastics performances both by students and professionals like a Russian group. The competition started post lunch; MAG + WAG-Qualifying competition started at 3:30 pm and concluded till 8:30 in the evening. Tomorrow and the day after a series of events would follow which will lead us to the winners of this national meet. Gymnastics is a combination of sports and art and the players unlike many other sports faculty have to start at an early age to achieve perfection in it.

21 teams from various states and services are participating in the event. A total of 500 athletes are participating at the event. Out of which 200 are women athletes. Champion gymnasts such as Rajesh Kumar Patra and Dipa Karmakar are also participating in the event.

Suncity World School was chosen as a venue for this event due to its infrastructure for gymnastics. Speaking about the national event Mrs. Rupa Chakravarty, Principal, Suncity World School said, “We are proud to play a host to National gymnasts and thank the Haryana government and Haryana Gymnasts Association for giving us this opportunity. Events like these are a great motivation for our kids, they will get to see national sportspersons who are an epitome of passion and perseverance and watching them from close quarters they will be able to learn from them.”

Shri Anil Vij , Minister of Health, Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Haryana while addressing the congregation said, “Haryana is the land of sports and sportspersons, Sports is in the soil of its land and the sports persons of the state have made the nation proud at many international events. The Haryana government is taking all steps to ensure better facilities, better prize money and an online data base of sports persons is being created for the benefit of sports persons of the state. This database will help them in getting preference in government jobs with the state.” He further added that the state would bid for the National games soon.
